Introducing our Gym M.O.M. (Member of the Month) for October 2022 … Allyson Doyle!

It is with great pleasure to recognize Allyson as she’s put in such hard work over the course of the last few months. First, Allyson participated with us for Ragnar Reach the Beach in September (which she absolutely crushed), then she competed in our in-house throw down in October!

Aside from those accomplishments, Allyson has long ben a consistent member, taking functional fitness and Barbell classes, to improve her overall fitness and technique with weightlifting. Her willingness to learn and attention to detail is what makes her a pleasure to coach and serves as an inspiration to other members.

We’re lucky to have her as a member of our community!

Learn more about Allyson below:

Q: What made you decide to start functional fitness training?
I began my functional fitness journey after my sister introduced me to CrossFit in 2014. I was not the most athletic growing up and as an adult was not diligent about going to the gym on my own. My sister’s introduction showed me that many adults can stay healthy, fit and incorporate functional fitness into their day to day lives.

Q: Are you a student/working professional/both? What do you do for a living?
I am a Quality Assurance manager at a pharmaceutical company.

Q: What are your hobbies/interests outside of the gym?
Outside of the gym, I enjoy cooking and baking. I enjoy the challenge of trying new recipes I stumble across! I also love skiing and kayaking when those are in season.

Q: What are some of your favorite movements (name up to three)?
Clean and Jerk, overhead squat, kettle bell swings.

Q: What are your least favorite movements?
Definitely the Assault bike and thrusters.

Q: What movements do you want to improve at?
I want to master hand stand push ups and strict pull-ups!

Q: What advice do you have for someone considering our gym?
My advice to them would be: Just come out and try a class! I never thought that I would be interested in functional fitness after sitting through my sister’s 5am class, but I was hooked! And every movement can be scaled to fit your fitness level, so you’re still getting a workout.

Q: What’s your favorite “cheat” food?
Ice cream. I love it too much.

Q: What is your guilty pleasure?
I love to watch home reno shows and complain about all the tacky interior design choices they make.

What is the March of Dimes? The March of Dimes is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the health of mothers and babies, with a focus on preventing birth defects, premature birth, and infant mortality. Learn more about the March of Dimes here. Why is it important to us? We are excited to host a workout in support of the March of Dimes and the South Shore Hospital NICU team. My sister-in-law, Amanda Dougherty, and my nephew, Owen Dougherty, received a lot of care during Owen's premature and traumatic birth. Amanda and her family will be walking on the SSH NICU/SCN team in the March for Babies walk on May 9th, and we would love to support her by donating to the cause and helping other families in need. When's the charity class? We would love for everyone to come join us, no matter your fitness level, in support of this great cause. The class will be hosted on Sunday, April 12th, at 11 am. T-shirts will also be available for purchase as a preorder up until March 27th. All proceeds from registration of this event and profits from all shirts purchased will be donated to the SSH NICU/SCN team under Amanda Dougherty. Donate and Jump into Class If you would like to donate more, you can go directly to Amanda’s page and donate here.

Strength expression is our ability to show or utilize the strength we have. We call it expression because in the world of lifting, CrossFit, functional fitness, or training, our ability to show that strength varies. Even though our potential strength is the same, we are not always able to fully express it the way we want. Whether that is hitting a max back squat, doing heavy thrusters in a CrossFit style workout, or hitting that heavy clean complex when olympic lifting, we will not always be able to hit our maxes, this is because of factors outside of just our strength itself.
