For the first time ever, we bring to you DUO Gym M.O.M’s (Members of the Month) for June, 2021 … Emily Astarita and Ariana Wetzel!

Em and Ari have been slaying class workouts together since day 1! In fact: to this day, Emily still holds the best score for our movement assessment test, recording a whopping 144 calories on her 10 min assault bike test!

It then took Emily a few months to make the decision to commit with us, but when she did, she brought along Ari, who we can’t say enough nice things about!

We are extremely proud of these two and are thankful that they are a part of our gym / community. On the surface, they are some of the nicest people you can ever meet and talk to, but once the clock goes from 3…2…1, they go HAMMMMM!

You’ve got to love it (and we do!).

Read more about Emily and Ari below!

Q: What made you decide to start functional fitness training?
We were both college athletes and wanted another coaching environment that would encourage us to push ourselves hard during workouts. We looked at a few CrossFit gyms in Boston and really liked the atmosphere and coaching style of R3vive.

Q: Are you a student/working professional/both? What do you do for a living?
Emily works as a consultant focusing on legal disputes for large tech companies and other tech-related projects. Ari is a water resources engineer who likes to do hydraulic modeling.

Q: What are your hobbies/interests outside of the gym?
We both love any outdoor activities like hiking, biking, running, wake boarding, and drinking beer outside.
Ari loves cooking and baking. Emily loves playing volleyball with her old teammates.

Q: What are some of your favorite movements (name up to three)?
Ari’s favorite: Jump rope, single-arm dumbbell snatch, squats
Emily’s favorite: Running, bench press, handstand walks

Q: What are your least favorite movements?
Ari’s least favorite: Box jumps, pull-ups, assault bike
Emily’s least favorite: Double unders, lunges, deadlifts

Q: What movements do you want to improve at?
Ari: double unders
Emily: muscle-ups (can’t do them, so nowhere to go but up)

Q: What advice do you have for someone considering our gym?
Come take a class! It’s a very welcoming community and you will enjoy pushing yourself during the workouts. Going to the gym has been our only consistent source of in-person communication during COVID and has brought so much joy and purpose to our days.

Q: What’s your favorite “cheat” food?
Ari: Nutella
Emily: Mac and cheese

Q: What’s your spirit animal and why?
Ari: The Starbucks mermaid because coffee!
Emily: A puppy because she’s friendly and has big paws.

Q: What’s your guilty pleasure?
We love watching reality tv shows including The Voice, Selling Sunset, and the Great Pottery Throwdown.

Q: Do you have any nicknames?
Ari is a nickname (short for Ariana) but some friends shorten it to Ar. Emily has quite a few nicknames: Em, Emmy, Emma, EmAss, and Rita. Her dad also calls her pinhead.

Q: An interesting fact that we probably don’t know about you!
We both have the same birthday as one of our siblings.

Strength expression is our ability to show or utilize the strength we have. We call it expression because in the world of lifting, CrossFit, functional fitness, or training, our ability to show that strength varies. Even though our potential strength is the same, we are not always able to fully express it the way we want. Whether that is hitting a max back squat, doing heavy thrusters in a CrossFit style workout, or hitting that heavy clean complex when olympic lifting, we will not always be able to hit our maxes, this is because of factors outside of just our strength itself.

Hey R3VIVE Athletes, The Apex training cycle, going from January 5th to April 3rd, is our next training cycle! This will be the firt training cycle of the new year! this is a chance to refocus and get in some good work to help you reach your goals! lets all work together to crush this training cycle! Functional Fitness: The Apex Cycle is designed to make your year-long strength work truly functional, focusing on controlled, powerful movements, complexes under fatigue, and mandated touch-and-go reps to prepare you for mixed-modal workouts. Our strength culminates in the classic CrossFit Total and the "R3VIVE Other Total," while conditioning features a wide variety of time domains, movement volume builds (like wall balls, toes-to-bar, and burpees), and regular Friday retests of past workouts to track your progress and ensure you perform your absolute best. Build: Designed to bring together all your training from the past year and prepare you for your strongest performance yet. Our strength work will focus on controlled, powerful movements, building you up to test your limits with both the classic CrossFit Total and the "R3VIVE Other Total," which challenges your skill and strength balance. Expect a well-rounded program including unilateral strength, skill work, and core stability, with dedicated days for deadlifts, squats, gymnastics, and varied accessory work to keep you healthy and constantly progressing. For conditioning, we're tailoring the work to challenge you in new ways, featuring a wide variety of time domains and movements, and a specific volume build on common movements like wall balls, toes-to-bar, and burpees. Instead of a standard test/retest, we'll be performing regular retests of past workouts on Fridays, allowing you to easily track your progress and see how far you've come. Our weekly template balances intensity—with short, fast metcons on Mondays—with recovery, incorporating lower impact endurance work on Thursdays, and a strategic taper toward the end of the week to set you up for success on Friday! Partner workouts will wrap up your week every Saturday, bringing the whole community together.
