For the first time ever, we bring to you DUO Gym M.O.M’s (Members of the Month) for June, 2021 … Emily Astarita and Ariana Wetzel!

Em and Ari have been slaying class workouts together since day 1! In fact: to this day, Emily still holds the best score for our movement assessment test, recording a whopping 144 calories on her 10 min assault bike test!

It then took Emily a few months to make the decision to commit with us, but when she did, she brought along Ari, who we can’t say enough nice things about!

We are extremely proud of these two and are thankful that they are a part of our gym / community. On the surface, they are some of the nicest people you can ever meet and talk to, but once the clock goes from 3…2…1, they go HAMMMMM!

You’ve got to love it (and we do!).

Read more about Emily and Ari below!

Q: What made you decide to start functional fitness training?
We were both college athletes and wanted another coaching environment that would encourage us to push ourselves hard during workouts. We looked at a few CrossFit gyms in Boston and really liked the atmosphere and coaching style of R3vive.

Q: Are you a student/working professional/both? What do you do for a living?
Emily works as a consultant focusing on legal disputes for large tech companies and other tech-related projects. Ari is a water resources engineer who likes to do hydraulic modeling.

Q: What are your hobbies/interests outside of the gym?
We both love any outdoor activities like hiking, biking, running, wake boarding, and drinking beer outside.
Ari loves cooking and baking. Emily loves playing volleyball with her old teammates.

Q: What are some of your favorite movements (name up to three)?
Ari’s favorite: Jump rope, single-arm dumbbell snatch, squats
Emily’s favorite: Running, bench press, handstand walks

Q: What are your least favorite movements?
Ari’s least favorite: Box jumps, pull-ups, assault bike
Emily’s least favorite: Double unders, lunges, deadlifts

Q: What movements do you want to improve at?
Ari: double unders
Emily: muscle-ups (can’t do them, so nowhere to go but up)

Q: What advice do you have for someone considering our gym?
Come take a class! It’s a very welcoming community and you will enjoy pushing yourself during the workouts. Going to the gym has been our only consistent source of in-person communication during COVID and has brought so much joy and purpose to our days.

Q: What’s your favorite “cheat” food?
Ari: Nutella
Emily: Mac and cheese

Q: What’s your spirit animal and why?
Ari: The Starbucks mermaid because coffee!
Emily: A puppy because she’s friendly and has big paws.

Q: What’s your guilty pleasure?
We love watching reality tv shows including The Voice, Selling Sunset, and the Great Pottery Throwdown.

Q: Do you have any nicknames?
Ari is a nickname (short for Ariana) but some friends shorten it to Ar. Emily has quite a few nicknames: Em, Emmy, Emma, EmAss, and Rita. Her dad also calls her pinhead.

Q: An interesting fact that we probably don’t know about you!
We both have the same birthday as one of our siblings.

What is the March of Dimes? The March of Dimes is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the health of mothers and babies, with a focus on preventing birth defects, premature birth, and infant mortality. Learn more about the March of Dimes here. Why is it important to us? We are excited to host a workout in support of the March of Dimes and the South Shore Hospital NICU team. My sister-in-law, Amanda Dougherty, and my nephew, Owen Dougherty, received a lot of care during Owen's premature and traumatic birth. Amanda and her family will be walking on the SSH NICU/SCN team in the March for Babies walk on May 9th, and we would love to support her by donating to the cause and helping other families in need. When's the charity class? We would love for everyone to come join us, no matter your fitness level, in support of this great cause. The class will be hosted on Sunday, April 12th, at 11 am. T-shirts will also be available for purchase as a preorder up until March 27th. All proceeds from registration of this event and profits from all shirts purchased will be donated to the SSH NICU/SCN team under Amanda Dougherty. Donate and Jump into Class If you would like to donate more, you can go directly to Amanda’s page and donate here.

Strength expression is our ability to show or utilize the strength we have. We call it expression because in the world of lifting, CrossFit, functional fitness, or training, our ability to show that strength varies. Even though our potential strength is the same, we are not always able to fully express it the way we want. Whether that is hitting a max back squat, doing heavy thrusters in a CrossFit style workout, or hitting that heavy clean complex when olympic lifting, we will not always be able to hit our maxes, this is because of factors outside of just our strength itself.
